Top Tips For Temps

There are so many things we would like to talk about but we realise that time in a busy life is of the essence, so we’ve chosen to focus on the things that matter.  This is only a 5 minute read and will hopefully help you to focus on what is important when you are a temp.

Whenever you have a new temp assignment or an interview, the bottom line is that you need to be prepared.

Punctuality.  Employers love candidates that hit the ground running.  We always recommend that you aim to get to the location of a job or an interview early, compose yourself, and be ready to get on with the job as soon as you walk through the door.  If it’s the first time you are going to an office, make sure that you have looked at a map, checked that there are no travel disruptions for your day of travel and factored in a little more time between ringing on the buzzer and getting to reception.

Commitment.  At Kosmos Recruitment, we are totally committed to you, we want to be sure that you have all the information you need to do your job to your full ability or perform at your best at an interview.  In return, we ask that you commit to a temp role for it’s full term.  Please let us know in plenty of time if you are unwell or unable to get to an interview or a job, so that we can be sure that the client is not let down.  Reputation is key and we have to work together to make sure that we all work together again and again!

Attitude.  We all like to be around, happy, enthusiastic, positive people.  When you spend most of your time at work, you want those sorts around you all the time.  So, if people enjoy your company and you work well, then why wouldn’t they want you back or even better recommend you to others.

Listen.  Always listen to what people want from you and always try to work things out for yourself before you ask a question.  People have their own jobs to do and whilst they will often be eager to help you, they might not be quite so eager if you ask questions that you probably already know the answer to.

Proactive.  Try to be one step ahead as much as you can.  Plan your day, listen to what is going on around you and learn from your experiences.  There will always be tasks and situations that land at your feet but if you are prepared and proactive you will often be able to cope with them well.

Creativity.  Think outside the box.  If you have to say no, try to present an alternative solution in the same breath.

Accountability.  You are responsible for yourself and the tasks that have been presented to you.  If you make a mistake, own up immediately and try to offer a solution as to how you will fix it – or how you’ve already fixed it!

Colleagues.  If you are a valuable addition to the office, your colleagues will notice.  Personality, attitude, creativity, loyalty and mucking in, all play a key part in how you are perceived in the work environment.   Being part of a team, taking direction from your managers and performing well, all reflect on you and if you fit in too, then you are more likely to be asked back to temp or recommended to other departments and firms.

Presentation.  How you look is very important.  You need to fit in.  We will do our best to let you know if an office is smart or smart/casual, the last thing we want is for you to be embarrassed because you’ve chosen to wear an outfit suitable for an executive/corporate environment when it’s a Design Agency and they are all in smart jeans!  However, an immaculate turn out is essential, no matter what the dress code is.

All in all we hope that the tips we have given you are helpful, we believe in you, you are not only an ambassador for Kosmos but you are an ambassador for yourself.   You will hopefully be placed in a temp role because you are capable of being placed, the rest is up to you.

STAR:  Situation, Task, Action, Result.  Understand the environment you are entering, embrace every task, take action and use your previous experience and abilities to get results.  If you work hard and smile, if you’re gracious and you get on with the job in hand and produce results, then you have done yourself and us proud, and it’s likely that more work will come your way.

If you are in a temp role through Kosmos, we are always at the end of the phone or email, so if you have any worries or questions, we are there to support you through the assignment.
